What Documents Do You Need?
Driving requirements in Thailand are strictly enforced. Make sure you have the right licence before you pick up your vehicle — riding without one voids your insurance and risks a fine.
For a motorbike or scooter
- →Valid motorcycle licence (class A1, A2, or A)
- →International Driving Permit (IDP) if licence is not in English or Thai
- →Passport — required by all agencies for identity verification
For a car or SUV
- →Valid car driving licence (class B or equivalent)
- →International Driving Permit (IDP) — strongly recommended
- →Credit card or cash for security deposit (caution), typically 1,000–5,000 THB
⚠️ Riding a motorbike in Thailand on a car-only licence is illegal. Police checkpoints are common on the main ring road. Agencies who rent without checking documents are not covered — and neither are you.
Insurance & Safety Guide
All vehicles listed on RideSamui include basic third-party liability insurance. Here’s what that covers — and what it doesn’t.
Third-party liability (included)
Covers damage or injury you cause to other people or property. Required by law. Included in all RideSamui rental prices.
Comprehensive / Own-damage cover (optional add-on)
Covers damage to your own vehicle. Available from most agencies for 50–200 THB/day extra. Highly recommended for cars and sport bikes.
Security deposit (caution)
A refundable hold — not a payment. Agencies collect 1,000–5,000 THB (or a passport copy) at pick-up and return it on check-out if no damage is reported.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an international driving permit (IDP) to rent in Koh Samui?
An IDP is strongly recommended. Many agencies accept a national driving licence in English, but Thai police may require an IDP during roadside checks. Without the correct documentation, your insurance is invalid.
How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Koh Samui per day?
Automatic scooters (110–125cc) start from 150 THB/day from RideSamui partner agencies. Semi-automatic bikes range from 200–400 THB/day. Weekly packages are 10–20% cheaper than the daily rate multiplied by 7.
Can I get a vehicle delivered to my hotel in Koh Samui?
Yes. Most RideSamui partner agencies offer free hotel delivery within 5 km of their base. Enter your hotel address at booking to check availability and the exact delivery fee. Airport delivery is also available for an additional charge.
